DATABASE DEVELOPER ( English Speaker)

in Edinburgh, UK.
You would be working as part of a growing team that punches way beyond its weight. The company is driven forward by this team and as a member of it you would have a crucial role in the development of the company. You would be based in our head office in The Shore, Edinburgh.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
You would be coding database solutions for key projects, the results of which will be directly visible on our public facing website.
All code you write will be backwards compatible with the existing site and will interface seamlessly with our web development team’s code. The majority of our website’s business logic is located in the database and as such you will have a large responsibility within the company.
There are two positions available at this level - you will be able to specialise in coding in one of the following two areas (please indicate your area of preference on application below):
Performance Specialist:
As a performance specialist working in the database team your focus will be on speed and capacity. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure that all database requests made by our web servers are served up in a timely fashion (under one second) for millions of searches.
Designing and coding performance monitoring tools and alerting systems,
Measuring and benchmarking performance & capacity across our production servers,
Improving performance of Skyscanner database code on our batch servers and our public facing servers,
Skyrepl - improving performance of our massive volume replication system.
Data Feed Specialist:
As a data feed specialist working in the database team your focus will be on data flows and data accuracy. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure that massive volumes of data are imported and transferred accurately amongst our various servers with as low latency as possible.
Skyrepl - coding the data transfer aspects and ensuring accuracy of our massive volume replication system,
Timetable import tool,
Availability import tool,
Data management system for use by our in-house administrators.

IF YOU:
are a programmer because you love programming,
understand that throwing hardware at a problem is rarely the solution: first you optimise the database,
get a kick when you find an elegant and efficient solution to a problem,
recognise that thinking before coding is crucial,
have moved to the database world because you view it as being the frontier of programming: the place where a superb programmer really can make a difference,
have experience in a variety of programming languages,
are ideally degree educated Computer Science or related experience,
